arakhne (upcoming)
At the core of the performance is a transformation myth. In Greek mythology, Goddess Athena challenges a gifted weaver, Arachne, into a contest in the art of weaving. Arachne produces a masterful work of art, but one that depicts the gods mischievously, angering Athena. As punishment, Arachne is transformed into the world's first spider, forever hanging from threads and weaving.
Representing different generations of magnetic virtuosity on stage, Leena Uotila, Seidi Haarla and Karim Rapatti transform into archetypes from professional wrestling. Set within an arena, echoes of ancient mythical narratives appear, prearranged and repeated on the stage.
The contests we witness on stage are over everything: winning, losing, the adoration of the audience, the most tragic story. Or whose anecdotes are the deepest, emotions the most authentic, scars the most gaping, and expressions the cutest.
The work brings together Sinna Virtanen's lyrical, playful, and darkly humorous play, textile artist Johanna Ulfsak's multifactorial fabrics, Erno Aaltonen's intense scenography, and Tatu Nenonen's sculptural and intimate sound design.
